DVD sound is distorted

Can anyone please help me? The sound is distorted when I play any DVD in my laptop. The video is fine. I think it's a codec issue, but I'm not sure. Mp3s, Divx, Xvid, everything else works fine. When I use AVICodec and GSpot, they both say I have the correct codecs. GSpot does say that I have 167 codecs. I'm thinking that's a lot, but I'm not sure. If anyone has any solutions short of restoring to factory specs, please reply.
