I'm searching for a good DVD burner but am confused about which one to get. Which one is better ... a DVD-R/RW or a DVD+R/RW?

Get the Sony DRU-500a. It does both! But it seems that media for the + is more expensive.

I dunno much, but from all the reading I've done discs made a la DVD R/RW is typically more widely accepted by off-the-shelf DVD players than DVD +R/RW.
I'm sure there are more differences, but what I've read so far leads me to this conclusion at least.

I'm not so sure about that. All I burn with is + media, and I've yet to find a standalone that doesn't play them. The - is the cheaper media though.
Sorry, I meant less expensive.

I am also going to be buying a DVD recorder. I am either going to buy the Sony DRU500UL (external) drive for my laptop, or the Philips DVDR985 for my home theater system. The research that I have done says that the +r is the most compatible in the US. I have also found that the sony is the only one that will do + & -. I heard that on the Philips, if the +R does not work on a player, than it can re- encode it so it will work (or something like that). If anyone thinks or knows differently, please let us all know. It would be very helpful.
If you're gonna live life on your own terms, you've gotta be ready to crash and "burn"

I recently went the +R/RW route after tons of research. This link provided some very good info about + and - burners and players: http://www.dvdplusrw.org/index.html.
Also, any +R/+RW media is supposed to work in any +R/RW burner. This has been my experience, and I haven't had any trouble with the less expensive brands. The -R/RW media costs less, but is not as universal as the + media, and may be harder to find for some burners.

DVD+R/+RW has been designed for the next generation of standalone DVD players and therefore would be the Ultimate choice, however the media is at least twice as dear as the standard -R/-RW. Keep up or get left behind!!! Seriously -R/-RW and +R/+RW are in a huge war to which one will become the standard, but i suspect it will be +R/+RW Drives. As -R/-RW does have some venerablilities in playback on some standalone dvd players.

I would definately say that the +R/RW will be the way to go (at least that what's Sony wants us to believe). However, just to cover my own rear, I went with the Sony DRU 500a with both compatabilities. Just got it in, finally, and will be happy to report back on any compatability issues I find with standalone players that I have.

dvd-r/rw work with dvd-r/rw drives and dvd+r/rw work with dvd+r/rw drives. both work the same way, there are new burners that work with both types of media. dvd-r discs are the cheapest, so i suggest a dvd-r/rw drive
