I'm leaving soon to get some groceries and while I'm out I was thinking of getting some DVD-rw's because when I miss an episode of a tv show I usually download and burn them, but for something I'm only going to watch once and dispose of I was thinking it would be more logical to buy dvd-rw's and just reuse them, but is it worth the buy because I heard they aren't very reliable.

Yes, these come in handy, especially if you're experimenting. If you make a mistake or no longer need the data, just erase and use again. Don't cheap out either, get good quality RWs.
