budlord ,
Click on the Guides at the top of the thread and 1/2 way down are the appropriate guides. They will also tell you what software you will need.

Since this is your first time you will need DVD Shrink and DVDDecrypter along w/ Nero

Shrink to rip and compress the DVD

DVDDecrypter to rip the DVD if Shrink can not and then burn the DVD compilation in .iso mode

Nero to burn the DVD if you click the box to use Nero during the burn in Shrink.

DVD Shrink and DVDDecrypter are free
Nero costs$49.00 and up depending on where you can get it. There is also a free trial of Nero on their website. Suggest you D/L it as it does alot more than just burn DVD's

Along with my plextor burner i got some free roxio dvd software, so i dont need Nero. BUT, to what ive heard, compressing any video file makes it lower quality and makes it skip a few frames every now and then. i want to burn high quality dvds, no shrinking or compressing, so now what do i do?

Go below to this site and look for:
"How to make 1:1 copy of DVD Using Shrink (no compression):
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/index.html

One of the very fine members here write that guide

I have encountered none of the problems when I have compressed the DVD's I have done. It really depends on if you have a good computer system and use very good blank media

Roxio is not the best burning software but if you want to use it then feel free to do so.

If you want the best looking DVD's then Use DVDRebuilder and CCE.

You can also make D/L copies of the original since you have a D/L burner but the blank disks will cost you about $7-8.00 a piece

okay thanks for helping me with that part, but now, how do i get files that ive downloaded (nothing pirated, just music videos ive found off of sites and stuff) into a file format that i can burn onto dvd and view it on any dvd player? what does the file extension have to be, and what's the best ?-to dvd converter program so i can burn my own custom dvds. oh yeah, and im very confident my computer isnt causing the problem. i have a p4 3.0ghz computer with hyperthreading, a sound blaster audigy 2zs platinum pro sound card, 1gb of kingston hyperX memory, an ati all in wonder radeon x800xt video card, a lite on 16x dvd rom, and a plextor 16x dvd rw dual layer SATA dvd drive, and a western digital raptor 10000 rpm sata hard drive. i dont think my computer is causing any problems :)

budlord,
Whatever the extension is it needs to be converted to mpeg2-DVD Compliant form. The guides at the top of the thread can help and if you want to search the internet input the current form of the file and then add " convert to DVD "
I use Adobe Premiere to convert .AVI and you could use that along w/ Scenarist but these programs can be pricey.
There is a program that is free for now- "VSODivX to DVD" that is supposed to do it but I have never used that program and the price is cheap as it is free for now. Nero can do .AVI files also.
You will need to find a program that you like and then play around w/ it and then if you have a specific problem w/ that program re-post in another thread what problem you are having and I am sure you will get the help here

I think Nero will still let you d/l the trial offer each month for you to play around w/ it. Some people do this each month until they decide to buy it. There are some free programs in the guides section like the one that I mentioned in the previous thread . Glad you got everything up a running and have fun w/ the ATI Graphics Card
