Problem dvd burner

I recently bought a Sony Vaio laptop but cant seem to operate the dvd drive! When i access device manager it shows up with an exclaimation mark beside it!
I have tried uninstalling in hope that it will be resolved when i reboot but to no avail!
As the drive is now non operational it wont accept my recovery disc!
It tells me there is a recovery utility on the hard drive but i am worried that i will lose any saved downloads!
Any advice would be much appreciated!
