I've never used a console before, being a total pc person. I just got an old ps2, which gives the famous cannot read drive error.
I was wondering
first: how to fix that?
second: is it possible to add a hard disk and boot directly from the hard disk? Since I can't use the dvd drive.
third: can you use a third party dvd drive in place of the old one?

I'm sure you guys must have discussed this before, but I haven't had the time to search through all these forums, so if you guys could either point me in the right direction or give me some pointers that would be awesome.

Thank you guys!

Unfortunately you cannot boot from the hard disk, but I heard you can boot from a joystick!
3rd party DVD drive should work fine too - just rip it of your regular DVD player and connect those 3 wires. Colors are always the same, it is impossible to make mistake.
