trouble with blank dvd's

I can copy my dvd to my computer, but when it comes to copying it on the blank dvd, nothing happens. the screen is grayed out. I've tried all 4 types of dvd's; nothing works. Any suggestions?

You have got a DVD burner and not just a DVD ROM drive haven't you? If so, what burning S/W are you using?

I am using dvd copy platinum for software on windows xp home edition; the dvd burner could be the issue, as I only have the DVD-ROM. I probably need to buy an actual DVD burner, right?
