Hi, I just bought this new pc and every time I'm trying to burn a DVD-RW it says Writing Lead-In then Writing Lead-Out and then it says the burning failed.

I can burn DVD-Rs just fine, and my pc is supposed to be able to burn DVD-RWs and it has been confirmed by the Nero InfoTool program.
I am using Nero Express 6 and I downloaded the latest updates.

I checked the burning speed and it's fine.
I tried it on two different DVD-RW multiple times, it always fails right at the start, and I have no idea why.

I tried googling for hel, but was unsucessful.

I have no idea what causes the problem or how to fix it.

help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you.

What brand of disc are you using? Have you updated your firmware?

windows didn't find updates for the driver, but the pc is like 2 weeks old anyway.
I just checked the device manager, it's an "AOPEN DUW 1608/ARR"
on google:
http://www.xpcgear.com/ao.html
that's my drive, except it's black.

It was already installed on a Cicero computer.

I have no idea what my firmware is, except that my pc is about 2 weeks old. How could I check the firmware version?

but I don't like the sound of that:
"These pages are only for advanced users. Bad flashing could destroy your drive definitively. Read carefully the installation notes of your firmware before you upgrade. The Firmware Page and the drive manufacturer can't be responsable on REMEMBER: This is at your own risk!!!! "

considering it's a new pc and my old one just got a hard-drive failiure.

The DVD-RWs are sonys. I don't like this brand, but it was the only one available at the store. (and the other pc store had no DVD-RW at all)

You can use Nero info tool to find your firmware version.

Start/let Nero open up/click Nero info tool/ and click drive tab.

Your firmware version will be close to the top/right side of screen.

Your bios will also tell you when you start your pc.If it's like my pc,it will be a quick glance, lol.

Some drives may need updated immediately after you get them,some-like my 2 benq's-don't have any issues so the update is unnecessary. When I come across a new media that my firmware won't recognize,I will perform the update on them.

I haven't seen any sony -rw's.Usually verbatim, tdk, fuji, maxell, ritek, and lowely memorex. If this is a newly manufactured type media, older firmwares will have trouble recognizing them. Therefore,a firmware update-if available-may help solve this issue.

Yes,there is a risk on firmware updates. Follow instructions to the "T".I just did one on an I/O magic 16x,and it was just like loading an ordinary program in your pc.I don't know if all firmware updates in other burners are like that, they may vary.

allright I checked the firmware and indeed, i did not have the latest version, so I googled for the latest firmware (because the dnld link from rotary's site was broken) and installed it, rebooted, checked the firmware again and it did update, but the burner gave me the EXACT same error again while burning.

So it's not the firmware :-(
