Difference between DVD-R and DVD-ROM

Besides the obvious which you can record on DVD-R. But what makes it different? Don't the manufacturers just record on DVDs the same way we do?

If not, why didn't they make DVD-ROMs in which you can write so they will be exactly like a regular DVD?

A Dvd-Rom is the ancestor of a Dvd-R , just like today the DVD+R is the latest protocol for media writing.

In 1995 a consortium Hitachi, Matsushita Electronic, Mitsubishi Electric, Toshiba, Time Warner, Pioneer, Thomson Multimedia, Victor Company of Japan, Sony, et Philips , got together and developed the protocol for DVD-Rom media .Recording on DVD Rom was not accessible to the general public unless you had the $ to buy the equipment.

In 1997 the DVD-R protocol became available; it made it possible for the average person to possess a burner at home. The first DVd-R were holding only 3,95 Go , less then the DVD-Rom , that was soon upgraded to the now 4,7 Go in single layer.

In 1998 , Matsushita Electric,Hitachi, and Toshiba came out with the DVD-Ram protocol ; DVD-Ram have a phase shift writing mode for stockage and archiving.
They use sectorial placement same as a Hard Drive ; they can be re-written to over 100000 times.

In 1999 Pioneer brought the DVD-RW that permits re-writing.

Sony has been working on the "DVR-Blue Technology", a DVD that will use a shorter wavelength then the infra-red presently in use ; it would stock up to 22Go on one face. Cost is still a major factor in merchandising !

So to answer your question ~~ It all boils down to an evolution in the various technologies and the feasability of putting products on the market that will be affordable to some at first then to you and me !

The answer to your question is really simple actually.. DVD's from the industry (original movies) are actually pressed not burned like we are doing.. To not get to technical there disks are actually put into a big machine which press's them kind of like a waffle iron...
