VHS to DVD using DVC and Pinnacle

I can use Pinnacles DVC 150 to down load a VHS movie just fine. But when I go to burn in on a HP dc5000 external burner I get problems. I have tried almost every combination in Pinnacle and DVD type but it works only when it wants to work. Last time I put the burned to a file and then after careful rebooting I tried to burn that file to DVD. It works for 2 seconds and says it is done -- NOT!!!! Should I just waste my time in trying to burn to DVD directly?
