Would it be worth wild to compress a VIDEO_TS folder to save space ?

I have a few DVDs i would like to leave on my harddrive for long term storage and would like to compress them smaller then 4.35GB

Is there any compression tool that would do this ?
Once they are compressed, i will not need to access them (for a while) and at that point i would just uncompress them.
I do not want to use Shrink's (or any thing like that) custom settings cause i want to the quality of the DVD as it is now.

Would zipping or Raring work ?
If possable would like to cut the size in half.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Win zip or rar should compress your video with no problems.

zipping or raring should work, although I don't know how much smaller they will compress, as mpeg-2/4 files are already heavily compressed to begin with.

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

Thanks.

I did try Raring and that did nothing (could be the version i have or a setting). With WinZIP i took a 4.35GB VIDEO_TS dir and compressed it to 4.03GB.
It worked but not enough for me to do abunch of DVDs.

If anyone else has ever compress a VIDEO_TS dir with a really good compression ratio, please post what app you used.

Thanks again.

if you wish to compress just the video itself use the Huffyuv codec in virtual dub as it is lossless, then you can use that file later on to make a dvd, or why not just burn 2 dvds, one for watching and one for backup that would save you all the hdd space
