Can anyone recommend something that will allow me to convert a DVD+R and burn it to a DVD-R and vice versa?

Only need your burner that will burn both formats.
Most do these days.

Well, our burner will burn either DVD-R or DVD+R, but as far as we can tell, it will not convert a + R to a - R. Seems to me it's a software problem.

The data doesn't care if it is burned to a DVD+R or DVD-R disc. Seems to me it's a not a problem.

Use DVD Decrypter

1. Put in original DVD
2. Open Decrypter
3. Select <Mode> <ISO> <Read R>
4. Select destination to save movie
5. Click on <Write>
6. When that process is done remove original DVD
7. Insert blank DVD media
8. Select <Mode> <ISO> <Write W>
9. Browse to where you saved the file
10. Click on write!

Presto backed up DVD from + to -R DVD or vise versa :-)

If you have both a DVD-ROM and a separate DVD R+/R- burner, Then put "original" disc in the DVD-ROM and copy to you burner using which ever +/- disc you want and your favorite copy program.

Agree with you. A file is a file but we tried what you suggest. Must be something weird with this particular DVD+R or one of its files. Thanks.

What brand name/and speed rate is that dvd+r that you want to re-rip onto a dvd-r?

How fast was it burned?

I need to check with the person who sent it to me. It's on a Fujifilm DVD+R disc. I just realized that it was burned on a DVD+RW. Max speed on the disc is 8X although I can only do 4X.

Have you just tried to copy and paste the files to your HD? It's worth a try

Maybe whatever you're using for a DVD player doesn't like the -R media (or +R, whichever it's not reading). Or is it just not burning period?

Have you tried useing dvd decryptor like bbmayo suggested. There is probably a bad file on the disc and dvdd should give you an error message.

It sounds more like Garyh is trying to rip one of his buddy's backups and his burner won't recognize that backup disc. Just a hunch with the limited info.

Is your dvd-rw combo drive recognizing if that backup disc is inserted?

What is the reason you are trying to take a fuji +r and burn it to a dvd-r? Compatability issue on a stand alone?

Need some more info like your burner name and model #.

The big question here is
Is your DVD burner a dual burner this you will be able to find out if you bought it or installed it yourself it will be printed on the box, if the machine came with it did it say "dual" on the paperwork you need to know this because if it is a dual burner then you can burn both fromats, now will the dvd that you want to make a copy of play on your computer, but not in a DVD player well here you go again, 75% of DVD players play DVD+ only 10% play DVD- only and 15% play DVD+/- but this is changing more are starting to play both formats.
So I didnt answer your question very good but gave you a idea of the differences, so you have this DVD and you cant figure it out. It could be a coaster, that means 1 that didnt burn the right way and just wont play, finally how old is your burner, I just bought a LITE-ON 16X DUAL LAYER DUAL DVD-/+ Burner and the first copy was a coaster and relized I had to do a firmware upgrade on this new burner.
Sorry not to beat around the bush but Hey see if it plays first then lets try to find out why it wont copy.

Where did you get this info from?

Anyway,

This sounds about right, but who am I to judge?

Anyway, sounds like compatibility issue to me. Try different media or a different DVD player.

I would REALLY love to know where that information came from myself? Please be so kind as to tell us where or who you arrived at that brilliant observation?

In fact I just went to a site a lot of members here use and here are the results from that site

3208 DVD Players supports -DVDR 93%

229 DVD Players do not support -DVDR 7%

2732 DVD Players supports +DVDR 90%

318 DVD Players do not support +DVDR 10%

Source http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers

So as you can see from there statistics more player's actually support the -R format..

Just in case you were all wondering I also checked on the DL media and it was as I suspected. Another reason to not rush into this format just yet

258 DVD Players supports DL+DVDR 67%

128 DVD Players do not support DL+DVDR 33%

Thanks to all for their thoughts on this. I always thought that there were more DVD-R players around. At any rate most of my friends have these, which is why I am trying to burn to this format (it's a concert). My computer system burner is a Sony DRU-510A (and yes, it is a dual burner)and my music system player is a Sony DVP-NC685V, which does not recognize the format of this particular DVD+R, which is another reason I'm trying to change formats. My Go-Video Recorder does recognize it, which helps me but not anyone to whom I send the disc.

Ok we understand the reasoning. What problems error codes are you having when trying to copy to other disc? Does your Sony DRU-510A recognize the original disc you are trying to copy when loaded?

Boy I sure got a bug going here LOL
Just my observation at store level,
Koss sold by SEARS U.S $32.00 plays both formats, but has a hard time to read Memorex, Sears Sony U.S $69.00 plays both media reads all well, Zenith Sold by Stero Plus Canada 2years ago, CAN $140.00, played just Plus,
and on and on if you walk through any electroinics dept. at any store you will notice of the players they offer for sale are 2-3 will play both,1-2 will play DVD- and the 4-5 will play DVD+, I just saying what I have been seeing and when someone goes and buys for the first time they dont know theres a difference and the it goes on like this, I burn but cant watch, If my %s were off I will Take this time to say EXCUSE ME, But its the point I was trying to make, ASK before you buy

I don't have a problem copying it on my Sony DRU-510A: it'll even do it on a DVD-R disc, but the format is not playable on music system player, Sony DVP-NC.

well, Batman, from almost everything I've read, about 95% or so play -R and about 85% or so play +R. And from personal experience, that's probably about right. Maybe whatever store you're shopping at has something against players that play -R? Did you actually put movies in and try to play them or did you read this from the boxes or did a sales clerk tell you this?

I hope you're not taking this personal, we just don't like to see people misinformed. I know I've had the smack laid down on me a time or two in the past.
