If it is only a DVD-Rom you can not burn DVD's. You can read only. You need to find out from either Compaq if this is a burner or go into Device Manager and under CD/DVD-Roms copy and paste the DVD part into Google and google it. This should tell you if you have a burner. If this is the standard version w/ no upgrade to burner then you only have a DVD-Rom

Right Click on My Computer>properties>Hardware>Device manager.
I googled your model and HP shows no burner on the standard edition which is probably what you have. You can probably install a DVD-5 burner for about $60.00 up or a D/L burners about $100.00 up

system check
hardware
device manager: look for dvdrom/dvd-rw drives and click on it.
Sometimes generic burners/roms are used: example: ide-16x dvdrw.
Carmike got there first, Here's a link to some quality burners that are fairly reasonable if you don't have a burner: http://www.newegg.com/
HP a1118x-b/athlon 64-3300+/BenQ 1650 BCDC/LG 8163B/Modded Wii/Epson-R300 and Ty Watershields!!!

An easy and fast way to identify your drives.
1. Click on <Start> go to <My Computer>
2. Right click on any of your drives and select <Properties>
3. Now click on the <Hardware> tab
Here you will see all of your drives

Look on Newegg.com. You can get a 16x DL dvdrw all day for $65.00 or less.

I agree, Just grab either a nec, benq, or pioneer OEM from newegg for around 53-67 or so. Get the enclosure for another 25 bux and you got yourself a sweet external dvd burner without any hassle. Good Luck.

Personally I would scratch Pioneer and insert Lite-On. Pioneers perform well with dvd-r media but are not capable of booktyping dvd+r media to dvd-rom (unles there is some hacked f/w I'm not aware of).
Why external dvdrw? Better performance, less hasle and more dependability with internal. Plus no enclosure necessary. I could understand with a notebook.

Yeah, that is what I got, but I am having some issues with the data transfer from my laptop to the burner. PLUS, since I only have 2 usb ports on my computer, I had to invest in a multi usb port, and that too is making it slower, since the flow isn't coming from the laptop to the burner, but from the laptop, multi port, then burner.
So, that is something to consider also in case anyone had any questions about it.
