I recently bought a new hard drive after my old 120gb broke. Everything was working fine till today. I put the hd in my dads computer but I tried to be quick about it and the computer ended up falling and hitting the ground. The computer immediately shut off but the light was still on, so I figured Imight've screwed up then but I played my game and everything was fine. I didn't get the games over to the hd after that though. I waited till today and when I put the hd in, the computer boots but then slows down, I look down to see some smoke coming out my hard drive and I try to shut the pc off but it doesn't turn off so I unplugged the pc and examined my hard drive. I then put it in my ps2 and it doesn't work. I'm not about to buy another hard drive and I want to fix this one. ANyone have any suggestions or know anywhere I can get it fixed. Its completely fried I guess and it looks like some goo towards the middle but its dried up. I JUSt got it 2 weeks ago. Its an 80 gb maxtor hd. I just need to know how to fix it. Maybe I can exchange some parts from my seagate 120gb cuz it still works to an extent.

Dude, your HD has given up the ghost. May I ask how in the world did you end up dropping your dad's PC? If it's smoking, and it's not ribs, sausage or a camp fire, that's trouble. Sorry about your mishap, but you would end up spending THOUSANDS if you attempted the repair yourself. My advice? Buy another HD and be more careful next time. Not trying to be remorseless, but accidents happen. It's your choice ... to buy or not to buy ...

The speaker cord was caught under the pc and I moved the speaker which moved the pc and it didn't fall that far. It was a hard jerk tho. I tried to be extra careful wit this one. So theres no way I can unscrew the hd and fix it. This is already 120 dollas spent on hard drives. I don't like wasting money.

I hear you. I lost an 80gb Maxtor and Maxtor wouldn't honor the warranty because it had originally come out of a Sony VAIO. Yeah, I know the feeling ...

You can perform surgery on your HD, but by the time you buy the components, find someone to do the work and hope it works ... it's gonna run you at least 2-3K. Why? Parts and repairs cost money. I saw a stat ... to replace every part on a 2000 Ford Explorer would run you close to $200K. Why? Unless you have a sentimental attachment to it, I would recommend just buying a new one. A brand new one. You can get them cheap with rebates, though I hate rebates. Or get one ... a brand new, from ebay ... they will sell you the HD for cost, and just get the rebates. Pretty cool scam, if you ask me. I hope that helps. Check ebgames/gamestop for used PS2 HDDs. I got mine for like $27.50 brand new, but the Wallyworld was going out of bizness and I picked up like 10 of them ... and flipped all of them for $85 a pop.

I found out that it's still under warranty till 6/30. Whats rma mean? If it means I can get a different one w/o dishin another 50 then its good. Looks like there's still hope left.

aite. so all i really have to do is send it to them and they'll give me a replacement? Would they be able to regain what was on the hd? Hopefully not, because most of the things on it aren't really legal.

No, you need to contact them first and then they will say they will accept it and then you send it. Don't send it before ... you will need to get them to say it is qualified to be sent back. More than likely, you can find the (800) number on the back of your HD.

Dang malcdogg, lol. I love WKRP in Cincinatti ... I miss that show soooo much. Thanks for the laugh ...

BTW ... I would recommend transferring or wiping your HD before sending it to them, though they probably won't care what's on there ... but they may be like 'Dang, kids are installing PS2 gamez on our junk...' I would recommend wiping. Peace.

Well, seeming all the junk happened to it, I don't think Maxtor can really see a whole lot. I am just writing in general ... if you can wipe it, use something like Partition Magic or Ghost, I guess ...

aite. they sent me a rma form. I'ma fill it out and send it sometime next week. The hd is completly unrecognizable by the hd. I don't know how they can regain anything if it something was smoking like that. I could always say I bought the game and burnt it to the hd. I'll hope for the best tho. G'd lookin out on the person who mentioned the warranty. Thanks alot
