Im using my Hauppauge tv card to caputure and using divx codecs 5 but i've noticed that encoding a tv show, that the file is too big. I try lowering the rate but it looks terrible and i know i've downloaded divx files that are smaller and look better than what i can do. Can someone tell me what to do or use that will help me?

thanx

At the moment i would recommend the beta's of DivX Fusion and XVID 1.1.

http://www.xvid.org/

Remember there are more things to encoding than resolution and bitrate (most files you'll download are in 2 pass encoding which can seriously reduce file size - are you doing that?), find a good tutorial and work from there. Can't remember URL for one of the top of my head but i'll post if i remember.

Capturing direct to DivX is a challenge because, obviously you can't do a 2-pass on a 'live' capture :^)
You need to either capture to MPEG2 and then recode to DivX, or capture to 1-pass DivX with a huge bitrate, and then recode smaller (2-pass).
Either way, the final quality is pre-determined by the quality of the capture itself.
This is why a 2-pass DVD backup can be better quality than a 1-pass DivX capture, while being smaller too.
You must therefore throw a ton of bits at your capture in whichever format, available to you, captures the best quality (I use MPEG2).
Then you can work on that file, making it smaller while preserving the full captured quality (I use XviD).
