I traded my son's v1.6 for my cousin's v1.0 after having a rough time with the spider chip. It boots up fine to the spiderchip bios but the controller does not work. It is the one that came with the v1.6. Could there be a difference between the two Microsoft controllers? Do I need the one that came with the v1.0?

Well, to answer my own question, I did need the v1.0 controller and then I had no problem flashing the chip.
