Problems playing Audio Cd's

Hello, I am new to this forum and not very technically minded so please be gentle! I must also apologise as I posted this in the wrong forum earlier.

Here's the techy bits:-
PC - PB EasyNote K5305 notebook
dvd drive - Matshita DVD-Ram UJ-810
o/s - Windows XP Home

I am having problems with getting the drive/pc to play or recognise audio cd's. What seemed to be happening was when I first booted up the machine and put in a music cd it would play but subsequent audio cd's would not play or indeed seem to be recognised. If I rebooted the machine then once more it would play the first cd but nothing more.

I tested the machine with program software cd's and dvd movies and both appear to work fine. It is just audio cd's that have a problem.

Last night I tried a new test and tried some brand new music cd's and some older cd's. Strangely it seem to accept the new ones but refuse to recognise the older ones. I tried about 7 cd's in this test so I cant say it's conclusive. A couple of the cd's failed to be play so I opened & shut the drive bay to reactive and suddenly they played. GGrrrr frustrating!

This is really annoying me as I have my first MP3 player arriving soon and I naturally want to put my music collection on to it.

Is this a common problem and are there any know fixes or drivers I could install.

I do not think I have Service Pack 2 installed yet if that is important.
