Problem Ripping Napoleon Dynomite, anyone else?

I tried both sides of the disc (widescreen & regular) and both gave me a sector read error at 89-90% complete using DVD Decryptor.
At the beginning a message stated: "Remove Macrovision Protection: Yes" but I am not sure if that was a standard message based on my options.
near the end of the full screen side, I got a message which did not appear on the widescreen side stating : "Authenticating..." followed by "Extracting Sectors..." then it did a few more before it hit 90% and couldn't extract anymore.
The disc I'm ripping is an original, and I wanted to see if you guys think it's copywright protected somehow, or if the disc is scratched or something else. Any info or suggestions as to how I can rip this would be appreciated.

Sounds like the problem may be disc related, i.e., imperfections, smudges, scratches etc. Iwould suggest that you try clesning well or obtaining a different disc and trying again.

That's what I thought as well. But check this out. 1) the disc has 2 sides, and what are the chances both sides would be messed up (ok there is a chance, but small).
2) I was able to read the entire disc sucessfully (on one side but not the other) with DVDShrink, but when I tried to back it up, it ran into a cyclic redundancy error and crapped out.
Alcohol doesn't work either. So what are the options.
And just in case, whats a good way to clean this disc?-As there's no chance of getting another. I used a tissue, but that didn't noticably help.

Cleaning disc has been discussed seriously and with some humor recently in a number of threads here. Search for disc cleaning or peruse the Media Forum for suggestions, both good and bad.

BTW - Originals are pressed and errors have occured and do occur more readily during this process than probably thought. Most people aren't affected due to stand alone players being able to skip such problems and have no noticible effect on playback. DVD readers and writers look for all data and the reading/writing programs will read the erronious data and try to reproduce it with disasterous results.
Some reader/writers and media combinations are much more sensitive to small "errors" than others, thus a range of results obtained by different people, using the same programs, can be obtained.

I used DVD Shrink/DVD Decrypter to back up this movie and had no problems. Since you are getting errors on both sides of disk in same area it sounds like your original has a problem on the outer edge, and you should return it and try another original.

dang, 2 questions:
1) DVDSrhink (& DVD Decrypter I think) pops up asking about the region, and since i am in USA region I select that one. The option is to just copy what exists though, should I try that and/or could this be affecting my sucess in backing this up?
2) hypothetically, if this is a rented disc, will they (a chain like Blokcbuster for example) usually exchange it for another copy if you tell them it was messed up?

I live in the USA too and have had no problem rippign Napolean Dynamite that I rented from blockbuster using DVD Dycryptor. Try cleaning the disc and make sure you have the newest DVD Dycryptor version downloaded.

OK first, no more talk about baking up movies you don't own. This is illegal.
As far as Napoleon Dynamite, there have been issues with the quality of this release. All I can say is try and exchange it for another copy. I had to do this back in Nov. The second copy worked perfectly. This was like the 7th time I have had to do this. The other six times where disney movies.

Agreed, I was just curious generally about the policies of some popular video chains. Anything I said was phrased hypothetically and anyone who cannot speak in such terms should learn to do so or not post.
Thanks for the feedback though. Wolfniggr, were your exchanges done at a rental chain (for movies which of course you own) or on purchased dvd's?

They were all brand new and purchased at various chains. (BestBuy, DVDPlanet, MovieTown and Fry's)

So someone tell me:
I own a movie, but it's on loan to my grandma who's touring Florida for the week in her RV. I want this movie so I go rent it and try to back it up. I get a scratched up or otherwise un-readable disc that, while it may play ok does not allow itself to be ripped. Do I have any recourse to get Blockbuster to give me a different copy for the remainder of my rental period? I doubt they'll try to play it on the spot, but for all they know I have an old player and the movie won't read, so is there anything I could tell them to get a different copy s I can back it up before my grandma gets back?

Customer is always right. Especially if he's a big ass mexican with a pissed off look on his face. I wonder why I never have a problem when it comes to dealing with customer service?
