i have never installed a soldered modchip before. my chip is the chipmod (found exclusively on modchip.ca), and although it is similar to the duo-modchip SE, the tech guy at modchip.ca assures me that it isnt a clone, but that it has similar build (both use the 17 wire configuration). i have a ps2 version 3 (which almost nobody posting on here seems to have). i am not sure if there are particular problems with the chipmod or with my version or a combination of the 2, but after installing several times i still can't get backups to play. my laser is working fine (cleaned it, boots originals quickly) and i am using good media (ritek G05's) at 2x speed burn. i always get the "red screen" message. i know it must be that the chip isnt installed well. any general tips? i have made sure that the wires are as short as possible and have resoldered all of the connections several times. it seems impossible to stop the wires from crossing, but i dont know if this is a problem anyway. i think i am doing something wrong with the soldering but i'm not sure, and it looks right from what i can tell. i have read a lot about people solving problems by cleaning the connections in various ways. i tried just rubbing on the connections with a q-tip but i dont know if that will help. what should i do to make sure that everything is clean and soldered well? i know that the connections are made and that there are no shorts, but i cant tell if the connections are "clean enough" to be proper connections, and there seems to be no way to tell. can i use some special material or solution to clean better? can you use alcohol on the board? i once read that if the solder connection sticks then the surface must have been clean enough, but after so many re-solders i am skeptical. i cleaned all of the wire tips themselves with solder (as recommended by pro solderers). i heard people talking about scraping at some of the small connections with a knife, but that sounds dangerous and i would think it would not be necessary. i know many people have not had so much trouble getting their chips to work (most people report trying 2 or 3 times until install done correctly). i would get someone else to do it but i dont know anyone who is a pro at it (they are all like me, did it once and somehow got it to work by luck). if anyone has any tips at all concerning the install in general, the cleaning, the chipmod or the v.3 ps2, please shoot me a reply. i have looked over the forums and found conflicting answers, so thats why i am asking about everything in this one big message. hopefully an expert can help me. thanks!
