I need to copy a segment of a DVD and save it in a file format that will play in Microsoft PowerPoint(.avi) or I could have it linked and play in QuickTime.
I would appreciate your expertise. Thanks.

Hi skylak, welcome to aD,

There are many programs but one of the easiest is DVDToAVI -

Enjoy,

Pete

Thank you.
I Installed the trial version from the site (I couldn't get your link to work but was able to find the site.) I read the directions, but...
Now I am stuck. The first thing the Wizard asked was to select the "Opne DVD root" or "Open IFO or VOD". I thought the first choice meant the drive that the DVD was in...didn't recognize anything in that drive. I had used DVD Decrypter (my son's recommendation) to get the files from the DVD, but there is a _ts, a _ts.bup and there are at least 10 VOB files. How do I know which one (s) to select?
You are really dealing with a novice!
Thank you for taking this time.

Hi Pete,
Did you mean to download:
1Click DVD to Divx xVid Avi 1.21 by DVDtoAVI Inc from http://www.programurl.com/software-1click-dvd-to-divx-xvid-avi-downloadnow.html
or
DVD-AVI at http://www.regnow.com/softsell/nph-softsell.cgi?item=8057-1&affiliate=24834

I downloaded 1click but that program asks me questions beyond my scope.
Although DVD-AVI says free trial, when I tried to download, I couldn't until I pay the $24.99. I don't mind paying the $ but I want to be sure I am getting the right software... and have sense enough to use it!

Here is a better site PLUS access to a nice clear guide should you become stuck :)

Sorry, I should have been clearer -

Okay. I got Smart Ripper. Good directions at this site:
http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/smartrip.htm

Then I used DVD2AVI but I wasn't getting audio...still don't know if I have audio but tried the directions at http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd2vcd_with_smart_dvd2avi_tmpgenc_page_3.cfm

(Nick's page has info on audio editing with GraphEdit but since I am already lost I don't think I can add to the audio issue until I get the .AVI resolved.)

Also ran into problems with TMPGEnc because it wouldn't recognize the downloaded. Downloaded the VFAPI converter (http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/DVD2AVI.htm) but still no luck recognizing the .d2v file. (I can see it when I open the folder so it is there!)

I am sticking with it but I am a bit frayed about the nerve endings by NOW!

Hope you can stick with me until I resolve this.
Thanks.
