Your ps2 version will determine what media your laser will read.
version 1-4 -r
4+ can read both.
You cant use rw or dl disks though.

You must have a way to open the tray without
pressing the eject button for the swap magic
disks to work.

The "TOOL" will vary also depending on your version playstation.

I have a ver7 and i use the slide card.

There is a new release 3.6
If you create your backups properly,
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/15105
you use good media,
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
and burn no higher than 2x.
Your backups will play just fine.
99% of all ps2 games require no extra re-building.
Some newer dvd-9 games need to be rebuilt.

if you can afford it get a dms4 modchip installed.

But i couldnt so i got swap magic.

The only difference is dms4 can play DVD-9 backups,
and you dont have to swap
the games will direct boot.

You still have to make the backups properly on good media,
and burn slow however.

I dont know about your site.
I make all my backups myself.
Its not hard at all.
If they use cheap media.
The games might not work.
