I have some sonic r+ 4x discs and they work in some dvd players but not all.. is this a normal thing that players have compatability issues with brands of media even if they play r+ discs?

This is very normal, and even more so on the cheaper media brands like Sonic.. try some better DVD media and your compatibility issues will soon disapear.
