This probably has been answered before, but I didn't see anything specific when I did a search, but:

How can DivX be compressed to 1/10 the original size of the DVD standard and not lose quality?

I mean, when we use DVD shrink to compress MPEG-2, we lose a lot more video quality. I have been looking into starting to use DivX, but haven't downloaded any proggys yet. I don't even think my DVD player supports DivX. But I might take it back if I decide to go with using DivX.

What do they do to the video to compress it so much so that they don't lose quality? What's the difference in MPEG-2 compression and DivX compression? I'm just curious about the process and what data actually gets cut out and what gets left on the disk.

Smileys must die!

DivX is MPEG-4, and it has a lot worse quality than DVDs. I suggest to use DVD-Rebuilder and CCE.

any lossless reencode will lose quality, just how much.

it really depends on the video, if its has a high compressibility, then you can get a 1 cd encode, if not you want to do a 2 cd encode.

try autoGK, its a suite of tools thats automated for your ease of use, good for newbies.

you can also, use dvd rebuilder with quenc, the newer HCenc.

you can also increase compressibility by denoising, etc.
to lazy to post links...

As said DivX is MPEG-4 which is lossy. So to answer your question; it doesn't. However if you were to shrink a DVD to 1/10th size the ASP MPEG-4 version would look better than the MPEG2 version if encoded properly.

yeah,
by applying the right filter for the right noises.
and of course some enhancer filter. (sharpening, etc)

right now i just use
degrainmedian
blinddehalo3 (as necessary)
and limited sharpen.

if i'm going a little bit more slower maybe with vaguedenoiser.

iip is kinda good, but its super slow.

all this are for avisynth.

read it up.
