Possible Answers to problems:
1. Could be a media problem - what media are you using? Burn speed?
2. This may sound dumb but was your friends volume on? Could it have been on mute or turned all the way down? Sound card bad?
3. The laser on your friends DVD player is probably more friendly with disc errors and different types of media. I'm assuming no playback problems like freezing etc.

Another possible reason for this may be that DTS sound was the only one selected and the configuration that you are playting the dvd in does not support DTS sound. I have this same problem with Gladiator.

When Microsoft asks you "Where do you want to go today?" Tell them "Apple"

Or for some reason the correct sound could be on the disc but as default the incorrect sound was selected. I've had this problem before, although it was only when using DVD X Copy. Go into the main menu of the DVD and see if you can change sound options there.
