Some of the movies i have will freeze like part of the way through and just sit there etc..(snow white, dazed and confused). then when i try to abort the whole thing freezes and says not responding can anyone help me?

What software are you using? Also what software do you have installed? What is the brand of media you are burning to?

software is Nero using Nero express 8x speed to burn just like all the others that worked them 2 just causes way more trouble then i need.

Try slowing down your burn speed this could eleviate some problems. Do you happen to have InCD installed with your Nero?

No that program just causes issues and I was making sure you didn't have it installed. It's odd that it freez's only burning certain movies.. Are you burning them from the hard drive or from a DVD ROM drive?

try changing your media , memorex isnt very highly regarded by most people.Try something a bit more durable and less picky, like taiyo yuden or ritek.With the change in media you may find that you will succeed in the burn

Try some better media..

There really isn?t a big difference in the type of DVD you would use + or- . It all boils down to personal preference or what most DVD?s players you own will support. If your stand alone DVD players are newer (within 2 years) chances are they will read either + or ? just fine. The most important factor when deciding media would be the brand or the manufacturer of the disc. This is a confusing one and talked about in depth all over the forum. So my recommendations to you would be these disks. Most will agree with this.. I hope :-)

Buying Online
Taiyo Yuden (genuine TY?s there are fakes out there so beware)
Ritek G04 brand these would be the x4 disks again beware of fakes
Prodisc 2nd class media, but newer media x8 seems to work well for people

Buying at the store (Best Buy, Office Depot, Wal-Mart ect.)
Fuji film ? Manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, MCC, Ricoh Japan, Prodisc, Fuji Film all fairly good manufacturers
Maxell ? Manufactured by Maxwell, Ritek, RicohJapan, Taiyo Yuden
TDK ? Manufactured by TDK, Ritek, RicohJapan, Maxwell, MCC, CMC Beware of the CMC brand
Verbatim ? MCC, CMC, TY, RicohJapan, Ritek again beware of CMC which it seems Verbatim is using more frequently lately.
Sony - RicohJapan, MCC, Sony

Note: A good rule of thumb when purchasing your media in the store is to look for ?made in Japan or Singapore? stay away from ?made in Taiwan or Hong Kong? When buying online always try and get ?Branded? media this way you can be sure you are getting the genuine article. There is an exception to that rule and it would be Taiyo Yuden disks. You just need to buy from a reputable dealer when buying online. Here are a few I have bought from with good experience. Of course it isn?t going to be the same for everyone.

Supermediastore.com ? Rated number 1 just about anywhere you look.
Rima.com ? Fast and cheap good service
Mertline.com ? Little slower on shipping, but quality media

Shop4tech.com ? Let?s just say you get what you pay for.. I received fake TY?s from them

Having issues with "supposabley" Ritek 4x DVDs from Allmediaoutlet.com. Nothing on the DVD shows it to be from Ritek or Ridata. Working an exchange RMA now, but hopefully its not a trend. I am making coasters like no tomorrow using Nero and know its the media I received as "Ritek". Have been using them since 2003, but lately looks like some substitution issues are happening. Could be isolated case, but according to customer service other callers are reporting same issues of screen freeze during burn using Nero. Media seems to be mostly likely reason.

Has anyone seen any screen freeze issues during a burn using older versions of Nero? I'm using v5.5? If its the SW, then I feel bad about blaming the media. But based on this thread, the media seems to be the likely problem area.

THanks for feedback, and followed your advise by upgrading the SW...but still in the fire.

Using Nero 6.6.0.12 now. Still having a screen freeze about 80% into burn. Must restart computer to gain access again. I've tried 1x, 2x, and 4x burns with same result. I've upgraded from Ritek 4x to Taiyo Yuden 8x media to see if that helps. Is it possible that the burner itself it the culprit? I'm using the Pioneer DVR-105 with the latest firmware.

I can burn to CDs using the same burner and Nero SW so, I'm thinking that there is something fishy going on in the DVD copy protection and the rip SW's inability to cope with corrupt sectors. I'm starting to think the reason I can't copy the movie is due to what I've seen before with Little Black Book and Resident Evil DVDs when I was using DVDXCOPY PLatinum- the new type of copy protection that adds corrupt sectors into the DVD. When I had these problems with DVDXCOPY Platinum, I switched to CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD and it seemed that my Any DVD v4631 was able to get around this new copy protection. Now I'm seeing the same typical results of a burning freeze around 70 to 85% complete.

I'm at a point where I cannot make any DVD back-ups with AnyDVD (v4631). Thinking about trying DVDXCOPY Platinum again to further fault isolate to see where the real problem lies. Figure its either the SW, the copy protection or the burner itself. The TY media is top-shelf and its can't be that.

I'm using AnyDVD v4631 and updated recently to v5111, but based on the history notes, don't thing the update will help- but I could be wrong. Also using 2.8.2.1 of CloneDVD2.

Should I buy a new burner or what ? Fresh out of options here.

before you go out and buy another burner, take it back to where you got it and get them to check it out.Should be some kind of warrenty on it.

I took the hard plunge of buying a new burner since all other troubleshooting options to flush out why I was having DVD buring "freezes" at 50% or more into the burn. I bought a Plextor PX-716UF. It can burn my DVDs now @ 8X (an I'm using Taiyo Yuden 8X media for added assurance.)

So, it seems my 3 yr+ old Pioneer DVR-105 isn't reading or writing consistently. (An the laser lens cleaning didn't help either.)

On a side note regarding new burners: The Plextor PX-716 drives have received many high marks, but when I tried buying the PX-716SA model from Newegg, they said they had over 200+ returns!. Since both Maximum PC and CPU Magazine rated the PX-716 PATA version highly, I challenged the rating directly to Will Smith, Editor-in-Chief, Maximum PC and Samit Choudhuri, CPU Publication Editor. Will Smith replied directly to me. (This was very unexpected and awesome of him to do this!!!!)

I have an add-one SATA controller and was getting ready to buy the Plextor PX-716SA version and between Newegg's massive returns and Will Smith's email (below). I opted for the external USB2 PX-716UF model. It is great. Burns at 8x with Taiyo Yudens. Issue resolved on DVD burn freezes. My Pioneer burner is now a door stop.

Here's the Will Smith message to my inquiry on the Plextor 716SA (the SATA version):

"Maximum PC hasn't actually reviewed the 716SA. We've only reviewed
the PATA version. Our new testbeds actually feature the 716, and an
NF4 motherboard, and I don't think anyone has had any problems.

In our July issue, we actually talk about the problems that SATA
optical drive owners are facing. It's not pretty, especially if your
mobo doesn't support native SATA.

I own a Plexie 716UF and am very pleased with it, I have burned dual layers with it and they have all tested out excellent. Use Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden for the most part. If you want to read more on the 716SA here is a post from CDFreaks that addresses the issue you mentioned.

The other day I saw some no name DVD-R pack of 10, and for the 1 time I saw "Made In China".

It's usualy make in Taiwan or in Japan :)
