Hi, I have been trying to burn and received the following messages:
'Failed to read D:\' (thats the dvd drive on my computer)
'Data error (Cyclic redundancy check)'
This has happened with more than one disk..a similar message also appeared when trying to burn using DVD decrypter.
Any suggestions?

try cleaning them as best as you can; Next try searching for this problem in search box at top of page as this is a very common problem.
Lastly, if you've tried the above and still no joy, list the names of the movies in case they have funny protections, but even then, if you search for specific films in search box you may well be able to sort it yourself. good luck..

Do as creaky stated and clean them real well. See if there are any scratches and if they are there see if after cleaning you can get DVDDecrypter to rip the movie to HD. DVDD will tell you in the log if there are any unreadable parts to the movie. If that comes up then you will need to either return the DVD for an exchange or borrow the movie from a friend

@chadcruz - aha.... your post suggested more than one disc. If it's a particular movie it could be arccos protected..

Those are new and there is no special encryption on them . Use DVDDecrypter as I suggested and rip it in file mode to the HD.

I'm curious...any reason for using file mode instead of iso mode? I'm not too familair with DVD Decrypter and have only previously used it in the iso mode.

chadcruz,
DVDDecrypter has been around for a little while and that was the only way to do a movie. Old Habits stay around but it has never failed me.
The only reason I use .iso is to do a D/L disk or to do a movie that is less than 4.3GB .

I tried it using file mode, however it keeps saying it cannot complete. I am backing these up for a friend, who has just informed me they were bought from Bali....So I guess this is the problem, they are cheap versions and Decrypter and shrink cant view them?

@chadcruz - i've copied quite a few discs 'from Bali' or that neck of the woods. From eBay or market stalls etc... From my experience with that sort of disc, the physical discs appeared to be of a lower or dubious quality. ie looking underneath the disc you would see funny marks near the centre spindle like scratches where someone's scratched out the disc code or whatever. Some of these were a pig to copy, i'd get errors as per this thread title. Cleaning and then ripping thru my burner va DVD decrypter always worked for me, albeit v slowly due to v dubious quality discs. I never did run a program on them to check the media code as i managed to copy all of them in the end.
Same as Elektra last night, Shrink threw a fit near end of analysis phase 2 or 3 times, even after cleaning. Bottom of disc had a few scratches, but got there by using decrypter to grab all files off; Shrink then complained about one of the VOB files, 'data error' i think which is pretty damn close to a CRC check. So.. not to be beaten ran all files thru Vob Blanker for a laugh. This took a while but appeared to work. Then i could Shrink just the movie. Then i had to sleep!. But i should be able to burn to dvd fine; hopefully the film will play thru fine, but i won't be surprised if there's a corruption or freeze on playback.
update-burnt and watched the film thru 100%. cracking film too btw.

I've given one of the disks a very good cleaning and I'm going to give it another go with decrypter. I do notice two very small 'scratches' toward the outer edge of the disk..which I assume has something to do with the disk being a pain to be burnt. These markings look as though someone has done them on purpose...I assume its regarding the coding.
On another note..I posted another message in another forum but maybe someone in this thread can help. I have been having alot of trouble with playback problems caused by burning with Nero 6. At exactly the half way point of playback the disk freezes and becomes unplayable. I havent had this problem when burning using decrypter or shrink, and dont seem to have this problem when using Nero to burn cds. Any ideas on why this happens?

@chadcruz - see my last reply. But to explain it better, skipping/freezing is due to a few things. Crappy media (we can prove some of this if you post the relevant section of your Nero log (minus serial number which usually begins with 1A21 or similar - edit this out). Log file is in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log or similar. You'll see that this log is appended to by each burn. grab the last part of log and edit. (especially if there are 100s of repetitive lines in there). Anyway, this can be caused by burning too fast, multitasking while burning, out of date firmware, DMA being off etc. All of this can be proved from your Nero log. Post it up and will have a look and try to get you sorted..

- that's not a good sign, you're dangerously close to 'swapping' ie running out of RAM and using Virtual Memory, ie hard disc churn, which'll be bad news for your burns. XP will use a lot of that 256MB, you need to shutdown background programs, disconnect internet, then virus checker etc during the burn to try to free up more memory. And look into upgrading to at least 512MB.

I've fallen foul of 100s of these before - FAKE discs. Just do a search for 'bulkpaq' and 'crappy' (select 'all these words in search') and you're welcome to view my comments on Bulkpaq!. You might be using another flavour of TTG02(ie may be better than the Bulkpaq) so let us know..
Plus you're burning at 8x - not good, especially with what i've found above. Try burning at lower speed, say 4x, maybe lower. I do all of mine on a v fast system with 8x media, but i still only burn at 4x out of paranoia, though my setup/media is capable of 8x..

Hi thanks again for the info. I definately look into getting some more RAM for my system. Also the tips about disconnecting the internet was a good point.
Onto the DVD R media...What do you mean exactly TTGO2? Is that a certain format? or a generic brand? The disks I have been using are branded as TDK DVD-R model number DVD-R47X50AC. I have heard of and seen bulkpack branded disks and am aware of their crappy quality, thats why I opted for these TDK disks...

edit - i forgot to mention a problem i have last night with my first 2 failed Verbatims (shock horror!) -
I was copying a bootable Solaris DVD for work, last night, so i copied the original as a Nero img file under 4GB or something. This copied to hard disc perfectly. Next i used dvdinfopro (free trial) to run a CRC check on the disc i copied from (Mirror Platinum 4x or smiliar). This CRC check passed with flying colours.
I thought this would be a good excuse to use my Verb's at their rated 8x for the first time. The first burn failed at writing the lead-in stage, well it took 8mins to be still writing the lead-in so i canned it. I used another Verbatim, again at 8x. This one worked 100% in the burn process. Next i used this Verbatim disc to rip another disc image FROM, now Nero complained near the beginning of rip with a couple of read errors. So i CRC checked it and as suspected - CRC errors near start of disc.
Next i used another Verbatim 8x, but this time at my normal habit of 4x. CRC checked the disc - 100% fine. Used this disc to copy another image FROM. 100& successful. Wrote this image to another Verbatim at 4x again. CRC checked 100%.
So even on this v good media on a fast up to date PC, my 8x media was error'ing out unless i used 4x. Now here i must add that i have burnt probably 300 movies on these 8x Verb's, at 4x only without one single burn error or playback error and have CRC checked a fair few 100% also.

@chadcruz, If i were you i would do some googling for tdk ttg02 (zero2) and search on these forums too. I've only ever used their CD's and i have read differing things about various types of TDK DVD media..
