I have just transfered a file from avi to dvd.

I watch it on my PC with no problems but on a DVD player it reaches a certain point and stops dead. On the PS2 it just goes to black and displays it's standard "cannot read" message.

Any ideas what causes this and how it can be avoided?

If it works on the PC, then the information cannot be bad, so how can I make it work on the other two?

It may have to do with the quality of the discs, the speed you used to burn the disc, and/or type (dvd-r/dvd+r)....

What brand names are your blanks?
Are they dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd-rw, dvd+rw?
What speed did you use to burn the disc?
What app did you use to convert the .avi to compliant dvd files?
What app did you use to burn the disc?

Some stand alone dvd players are picky on what format they can play. If you have a relatively new (about 1.5 years), then you probably wouldn't have these problems. The most compatible format may be dvd-r than its counter part, dvd+r. More information is needed to see what we can do to solve your problem.

5 - What app did you use to burn the disc?

1 - Ritek (Taiwan)
2 - DVD-R
3 - 8x
4 - Always either DivXToDVD or WinAVI
5 - Shrink to gather, thus Nero to burn

Based in the UK, my access to resources is perhaps no less but is different.

I am aware my burn speed could be lowered but I guess I am impatient. What is the optimal speed?

Otherwise, how about those conversion tools?

Other suggestions?

I hear Ritek may be good, but you may want to get some Verbatims or something made in Japan. You can browse the dvd-r media forum and do a quick gander to see which people have better success with which brand names. Personally, I use Fuji discs....

To get better results use a lower burn speed, such as 2x or 4x. Some people get away burning at 8x with no problems, you're better off burning at a slower speed to avoid playback problems.

Divxto DVD is great, but I've never used WinAVI. Is the quality good with it?

Well I can always lower my burn speed, but I guessed that much.

I am friends with some film students and make copies for them.

I am wondering if, copies being burned at 8x speed for the purposes of argument, the end result would escape those problems if the master was burned at 1x or 2x instead of at 8x. Does the speed of the original encoding make a difference or is it just of the copies that makes or breaks playback?
