I am wondering if it is ok to use a sharpie on top of dvds, instead of printing up labels?

Markers better than labels! No peeling off, easier, no heat build up in burner/drives. Sharpie type marker works best for me.

I've seen some stores sell specific markers for CD/Dvd's. Are they no different than sharpies?

Both sharpies and cd/dvd markers work very well. I use them both and I also use inkjet-printable dvd+r media. Be cautious if you decide on paper stick-on labels later down the road. There can be many playback issues with them.

im a sharpie guy myself...1,000+ burns w/ sharpie markings only...no playback issues whatsoever. highly recommend it if you don't need to have exact duplicate of the cover of original dvd. sharpie to the rescue.

Sharpies all the way. There are people who use labels & report no probs (although few & far between). Personally, I prefer not to take the risk! Sharpies are cheaper & a gazillion times faster!

definitely agree, the efficiency of the sharpie blows away the time it takes to load, scan, etc...the labels for dvds. unless you must have an exact duplicate, cover included, for your dvds...then all the power to you. i buy sharpies in bulk from local costco or office depot, can never have enough in different colors. :)

The CD specific markers use an ink that contains no acids since acidic ink supposedly will deteriorate the reflective layer on a CD which is an urban legend if you ask me. Even if that were completely true it wouldn't affect DVDs anyway since they're constructed differently than CDs. Unlike most CDs where the reflective layer is unprotected from the top DVDs have two protective layers over the reflective layer. Here's a link that shows what I'm talking about:

I use the fine point sharpie when I don't use a printable disc. Works great. Never use labels, they suck big time.
