Does anyone know of any freeware DVD ripping software that I can download off the internet that does a decent job? If not, what would be the best brand to purchase?

Also, I was told that it was not possible for me to download normal dvds and burn them on the dvd discs using my dvd/rw drive. Is this true?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

In my opinion, the best is DVD Decrypter. You can download it from the download section of this website or from www.doom9.org.

I don't know what you mean by 'normal', but, if you mean under 4.37G then you can make a str8 backup to 1 DVD-R. If the movie is larger it takes some editing.

the software you will need is :

1: dvd decrypter
2: Ifoedit0.95
3: Rempeg 1.52
4: CCE 2.50
5: dvd2avi
6: chapter extractor
7: vobedit
8: VFAPI reader

all of these tools are free ware and are available at either this site or at doom9

read the guides and read the forums and use the search button , I use three methods to back up my dvd's

1: a straight ripp and burn but the dvd must be under 4.37 gb

2: rempeg to help re-encode the dvd to bring it under 4.37 gb

3: CCE 2.50 to help re-encode the dvd to bring it under 4.37 gb

the guides will teach you how to do this but its all free and you only need to ask if you get stuck , dont expect a quick response as the people on this site are from all over the globe

happy back ups :0)

I use the back up option in smart ripper 2.41. Then use ifoedit to configure the rip, then nero to burn. I've heard a lot of good things about dvd decrypter but I could never get nero to burn the dvd video after using it. It kept saying compliance test failed. Works a treat with smartripper.

Ok, here's another question. I used DVD decrypter and successfully ripped the DVD. Now how do I save the movie to a CD or DVD disc? When I tried doing this using DVD decrypter it kept saying that the files were not compatible with ISO format. What does that mean?

As before all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

helpme22,

The reason that you got the error from DVDdecrypter is that you ripped the movie using 'File' mode. DVDdecrypter only burns image files.

If the DVD is over 4.37G then you can't burn an image using DVDdecrypter, you must "rip" the files using DVDdecrypters 'file' mode. Sounds like you did that. Now, before the files can be burned back onto a DVD-R they must be edited and restuctured. This is done with Ifoedit.

Once you have everything set to burn, you can create an image file using Imgtool and burn with DVDdecrypter. However, most people prefer to just burn the files directly using Nero. You can also use the software that came with your burner like Recordnow DX.
