video length/playback problem?

it seems like a lot of my videos, like episodes of tv shows or anything long will not play back right anymore. Say i have a video that is a half hour long and i start playing at the begining it takes about a minute for the status bar to go all the way across then the video stops at a minute into the video. but if i manualy drag the bar to the middle of the track then the video plays from 15 minutes to 15:30 then stops at the end of the track.

all in al the status bar slider thing is moving WAY to fast for some reason.

any ideas?
