DVD Architect - Video quality issues

I've been a long time "lurker" of the Afterdawn forums, but thought I'd take the plunge and join up - I have a question.

I'm using Sony DVD Architect 2.0 to create a DVD. I've set the project properties to PAL DVD as the source video file is PAL, and the same resolution. The source itself is three MPEG1 files, each around 800Mb in size, with a total playing time of around 4 hours, give or take the odd 10 minutes.

The problem I'm having is this: When I've completed the DVD, with a good 12 hours of re-encoding through DVD Architect, it works, but the quality is reduced quite a bit - when there's a lot of movement it become VERY block, wheras the MPEG1 original didn't. I used AVICodec prior to encoding, and it gave me an estimate of (with combined audio and video) around 1.7Mbps. I gave DVD Architect at least 2.2Mbps, so I don't think bandwidth is the issue.

The thing I'm keen to know is, am I doing anything wrong, or is this to be expected? I assumed that encoding from MPEG1 to MPEG2 wouldn't degrade the image, it would remain near as darn it the same. I took into account the data rate and made sure I left enough headroom in the Mb/s area. Is it a fault of mine? Is there a better encoder out there for encoding MPEG2 streams that I can use on files to readily drop them into DVD Architect? Have I misunderstood something? :)

Any advice would be gratefully received!
