bad news mate.
you need an operating system with ntfs filing system to handle large files, 98 can only handle files upto 1gb using fat32.

if you are going to get into ripping dvds then windows 98 can do it but you will end up doing it the long way, what i would recommend, only if you are serious about doing them is change your operating system to a system that supports ntfs.
a lot of the time when doing dvds you will end up with files bigger than 1gb and even upto 6-7 gb. windows 98 can only handle files upto 1gb (thats single files).

I currently use windows ME with no major problems.
I am in the process of building another pc higher spec with either windows 2000/xp as these fully support the ntfs format.
As thingimij rightly said depending on what sort of process you use (it takes long enough anyway) depends on whether you need the ntfs format.
I haven't tried using windows 98 but it would drive me nuts if it cannot handle large files.

I'm using Windows98SE with FAT32 and although there is a file size limitation of 4gb, I have not had a single problem with ripping DVD's, and god knows i've been doing it alot!
