in order to copy a vcd (created from a dvd by someone else), do u need to rip the tracks like you do for a dvd, or is there an easier way? does just putting it into a cdrw and telling it to copy work?
cheers

Just using your favourite CDR software's CD-2-CD copy should do it.

You even can't _rip_ VCDs, because there's nothing to rip :) Just copy the frigging CD to HDD using Windows, you don't need any tools for that other than Windows Explorer. The video files are the big .dat files.

For more elegant method use VCDGear (you can find it from our software section) to copy the .dat files back to .mpg which is easier to manage.

This works for me; I extract the .dat file, then convert it with TMPGEnc, to make a mpg.

I open the files of the vcd, there will be alot of empty folders. Pick the folder 'MPEGAV' and inside it will be a .dat file, example Avesq01.dat (it won't be named after the movie). I copy and paste it to my hard drive, then later convert it, to mpg.

Hope that helps,

Yvette

Nonono, you don't need to convert the DAT to anything, it is already an MPEG file. Actually most of the burners, like Nero, can even take DATs as an input when you burn them to VCD.

For some vcd's, I can't copy .dat file. Is there any program to copy a .dat file from vcd to hdd?

Try vcdgear, trying dat->mpeg, resulting error.

Can you clone a music cd?

Can you clone a cd-rom?

Then you can clone a vcd with your eyes closed. If you are happy with the layout of the vcd in question, then it is the simplest thing in the world to do a simple Disc-To-Disc copy with just about any burning software available. I've done it, it works fine.

VCD-Gear; .dat files; disc-images - this is all just extra work. Why complicate things?

Ever wonder why so many Asian vcd's have the words, "For Sale Only - Not For Rental" printed on their back covers?

It is because, once obtained, you can clone a copy of the disc with your eyes closed.
