I'm curious about something..i've been doing some reading and have a few questions:
1.- How much time does backing up a dvd takes...let's say using 1x or 2x?
2.-I've been thinking about buying a Sony Dru500-A. One of the may reasons is that's supposed to write 4x into DVD-R (i think). Is it worth it? i read in a thread that this speed will depend on the media too and maybe it's not that economically convenient right now. Sony costs around US$350 and there are burners like pioneer a104 (2X) that costs around US$250.
What are your recommendations?

its not the burning thats really an issue to me personally.
ask yourself how long does it take to learn to copy a dvd correctly?
you will burn a few coasters b4 you get it right, better buying a dvd r/w disc to save you the coasters in the long term
3 types of copy's
1 straight ripp and burn
2.ripp and split to 2 discs
3.ripp,stripp and shrink
the third being the hardest to get right.
when you do get it right, do you keep the menus and extras or do you just copy the main movie ?
best advice is to read the guides and use the search button on a topic when it gets tough the longest part is re-encoding but you can start that prior to going to bed and when you get up in the morning its done.

dvds can rarely be copied one to one like a cd.. most dvds are dual layered (meaning, they are larger than normal blank dvd (single layered)).
-For me to backup a dual layered movie to a single blank dvd takes about 6 hours total with stripping the extras out, shrinking the size of the video (transcoding) and then remuxing the m2v file back into vobs and then burning to a blank dvd+r disc.
I own a HP DVD200i DVD+R/+RW burner and like it alot. Not sure if you want to go with dvd-r/-rw or dvd+r/+rw but i don't want to start debated conversation on which is better, they both are fine in their own way (like apples are to oranges.. etc..)
