MPEG4 Modifier says this xvid video is not encoded with Qpel or GMC yet it will still not play on my dvd player. When it plays the picture is very whacky, very pixeled and odd colors, distortion, etc. Is this a firmware issue or what? Any Ideas? I only burned it because it said it didnt have the Qpel/GMC stuff... thanks

Philips recently released a firmware, you can try searching their site for it, but I've heard that it does not really help much.

If it doesn't skip (sound or video), but is only pixelated, you can always hit the system menu key twice and it should go away.

If sound and/or video skips or lags, then you probably will have to re-encode. This will take anywhere from 45 minutes to 1.5hrs for a 2hour movie. If the movie is worth it, re-encode is a guaranteed way to get it to play on your player. Re-encode using xvid codec speeds things up alot, plus you get smaller file size with same video quality. Thank you for the quick and CORRECT answer. I hit the system menu button twice and it cleared right up. You have no idea how happy that makes me, I have burned about 40 movies with this problem lately, woohoo!

I do have another few questions... I have been converting my .sub files to .srt files with SUBRIP so they will play on the player. I presently have a .sub file that will not open with this program so I can convert it. What sort of information do you have have about subtitles? any shortcuts or other converting programs I could try? Also, are there firmware upgrades for subtitles? I read about it on some site but was afraid to just download some file and stick it in my new player. I also saw firmware info on some site about skins or stuff for the players, any info on this? Also, do you have anything in general, like shortcuts, that I am unaware of, like hitting the menu key. I only recently found out I can hold down the stop button to eject the cd!

Regarding the Qpel and GMC issues, in my experience if you play a file encoded with either of these options, the video won't start and you will get a codec not supported message on the menu screen.
