You don't need one unless you want to play online.
I backed mine up with DVD Decrypter and it worked fine.

I have backed up splinter cell chaos theory with DVD Decrypter like I backed up everyother games that have successfully worked backed up. But when using the original disc and hd loader the game froze after hitting 1 player or co-op. Then when backing it up does the same thing but shows a little clip of the loading bars and freezes. What is the problem?
