I tried several times and failed to rip a movie DVD using AnyDVD & DVDShrink . It seemed due to some scratches on the DVD disc . I tried also DVD Decrypter and the same sad result. However, with DVD Decrypter I was able to pinpoint the problem to a specific .VOB file ( i.e. where the scratch occured ) . Apparently, the DVD reader on my PC could not skip the corrupted sectors and just froze! However, the stand-alone DVD player can play the disc perfectly on TV . Is there some programs that can skip those scratched locations and rip the DVD disc ? Please advise. Thanks.

you could set DVD Decrypter to ignore read errors (cept it might stuff up the dvd navigation structure) or try toothpaste/soft car polish on cotton wool to polish out the scratches

I would try and find a copy of DVD Rescue, this software has worked for me. 321 Studios makes this software, they have gone out of business but I am sure someone out there has a copy.
Good Luck it worked for me!

Thanks deadcat and buckscrap, for your kind suggestions. I tried DVDXRescue by 321 Studio . Unfortunately, its performance in my case was even inferior to DVD Decrypter ( i.e. It froze much earlier than DVDDecrypter did!). Please further advise .

you might try DVD Decrypter in brute force mode.and ignore read errors.

Thanks , aabbccdd for the tip. The "brute force" option in DVDdecrypter you mentioned is for cracking the protection. As I used AnyDVD + DDVDdecrypter, this option is not useful . "Ignore read error" did not work in my case :-(.
__silent85 : Thanks for the advise. I'll try it next time and see. For now, it is the deep "scratch" that caused problem, not dirts on the DVD surface.
Apparently, the lesson is : when the "scratch" is serious and the DVD reader can not read ( i.e. using DVDShrink and DVDdecrypter ) little can we do !I finally gave up and perhaps rent this movie again , hoping for a better DVD disc next time.
Thank you all so much for your precious contributions !

If the scratches is big and while playing in your stand alone dvd player's causing it to freeze or skip. Then you're likely to fail the back up procedure and the chance of getting a successful back up is very slim.

You could ask them for a good copy, just tell them you cant backup the last one and im sure they'll help you out

Thanks, alkohol and deadcat for your tips.
_I agree that if a DVD disc skips or freezes in a stand-alone DVD player then it is useless to backup on the PC , regardless of whatever softwares you try ! The condition of the DVD disc surface needs to be repaired first ( i.e. as suggested by deadcat and silent85).
_Try AnyDVD + DVDShrink to rip and shrink it. If DVDShrink fails, try your last resort : DVDDecrypter . If it fails, go for another original DVD copy of the movie as suggested by deadcat bcoz you are dealing with a seriously scratched DVD disc here :-(

i was being sarcastic, you shouldnt be backing up rented movies, only ones you own. if you were to actually ask someone at blockbuster for a good copy so you could back it up please let me know what they say

That's O.K. , deadcat . Ofcourse, I won't say anything, just rent another copy. At the price of 1 $/ copy/day ( for 3 month old DVD movies, no kidding), who is going to ask ? BTW, I never go to a Blockbuster... Go for an independent , friendly store :-)

Actually, as I was around (so to speak) when the rulles were amended, there isn't anything wrong with renting a movie to copy. As is the case with downloaded movies available prior to release date.
The only thing against the "PIRACY" is not to link directly to a crack, warez OR serial site OR a link to a specific download site where a crack, serial, etc. may be found.
Blaze on . . .

ScubaPete gave an excellent , comprehensive treatment how to physically repair a scratched DVD discs in the "DVD2One forum" ! After reading this discussion, I knew exactly what to do next
time ;-)
Let's stick strictly to technical issues . Thanks ScubaPete and squizzle for your liberal thinking...

@ Zooco,
If you posted your question in the other forum, why was it posted here ?

@ScubaPete :
_Apparently, you posted the DVD disc repair techniques in the wrong forum (i.e. the DVD2One forum ) . No harm done :-), people know quality when it's from ScubaPete. I did make a cross reference as to the other forum, though.
