I am buying my buddy's xbox for $50 because it has a bad hard drive. I would like to just replace it for now with a original oem 8gb unit. I am most likely going to purchase one off of ebay for cheap. Most of the units on ebay say that they are 'unlocked' and ready to put in. Is there any precaution that I should take before I buy a oem hd? Will a oem hd just slap right in and work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. - Peter

If it is unlocked, you will need to lock it in order to use it without a mod chip.

You need a modchip to lock it :P

And when you lock it, it stores the password on your xbox motherboard, so only your xbox can use that HD. Thats what locking is...And If its not locked, your xbox will come up with an error when you try to boot it. So you are going to have to either:

A)Buy the new Hard Drive and a Modchip

B)Buy a new motherboard/Hard drive combo

C)Buy the new Hard Drive and a Modchip

D)Buy his xbox then sell it on Ebay for $80+ and come out with more money

E)Buy the new Hard Drive and a Modchip

lol this is pretty funny, i just now hooked it up to my tv to test it out, and it seems to be working fine now....lol. I got the 'broken' xbox with 2 controllers and the dvd controller for $75.......lol. I have no idea why it would work now. Before when it would try to load a game the hard drive would make this 'clunking' sound and an error screen would come up, but now it plays games fine....hmmmmm...maybe it just needed to be unplugged & reset??
