Hi,

I've been doing lots of AVI --> DVD encoding over the last year without too much fuss. But lately, I've been trying to backup a number of files from different sources and formats by encoding them all to the same DivX format for storage.

But I've been having a weird problem where, whether I use TMPGenc Xpress or Virtual Dub for the encoding, almost all attempts to encode freeze up somewhere between 40-60% (I did one successful 23-minute TV epsiode, but that was an anomaly). I've downloaded the Xvid codec, too, and the same thing happens with that. Last night I bought the DivX Pro codec, but the freezes are still happening using that. Through all this, my MPEG encoding is flawless, my system just seems to choke on compressed AVI encoding.

At first I thought it was because the source files had VBR audio and TMPGEnc chokes on that, but I used VDub to export the audio tracks as uncompressed PCM WAVs and am using that as the source audio.

Any ideas? I'm using XP Pro.

UPDATE: I've just discovered that it's not the video protion of the necode that is jamming up, it's the audio encoding. When I encode as a Divx with uncompressed PCM audio, it works fine. But when I try to use MP3 128kbps 48000 khz audio, the encoding process stops about an hour into the encode. Maybe I should try a new mp3 encoder?
