DVD .vob to .avi or .mpg

I have tried everything. How can I turn a simple .vob file into and .mpg or .avi so I can edit it in a video editing program.

I will always get an error when I try to convert to .avi or it won't be openable by an editing program with .mpg. I was going to edit it in Windows Movie Maker.
