Hi - I will try to list as much information as possible. I am converting an .avi file to DVD NTSC.
The original file is .avi XVID 23.976 mp3 VBR
I extracted the audio with VirtualDub and then ran it thru ffmpeggui to mp2
I loaded the avi and mp2 audio into TMPGEnc and encoded to DVD NTSC 29.97 with CBR MPEG2 audio.
My problem is the audio is out of sync BADLY - what step am I missing??
Any help would be greatly appreciated - Thank you very much :)

Not missing a step, you're including one you don't need.
Don't encode any audio in TMPGEnc, just encode video to m2v.
Don't encode to 29.97fps, stick with 23.976 and use 3:2 pulldown.
Only add audio when authoring.

Ok this is all new to me - How do I encode to 23.976 with 3:2 pulldown?? I tried sticking with the 23.976 which is (If Im understanding it correctly) VCD NTSC Film - correct? But when I encoded it that way and then added it to DVD Lab it told me it was an incorrect version.
Maybe Im confused - sorry
Thanks for all your help :)

Thanks so much :)

I was trying to figure this out on my own and I ran into the same problem as before.
I open TMPGEnc - choose VCD-NTSC Film (thats the only one I see listed for 23.976)
In "Other settings" under Advanced I choose 3:2 pulldown.
But when it takes me to the last page it won't let me select just the video its not highlighted - only the system video&audio is selected.
What am I doing wrong now??

Ok - I think MAYBE I have figured it out. I was selecting VCD NTSC Film because of the 23.976 fps but I SHOULD choose DVD NTSC and then choose 3:2 pulldown and only extract the video right??
Also let me know if you like the other encoder better than TMPGEnc.
Thanks so much :)

Do you still have to extract the VBR MP3 audio when you use Procoder or Mainconcept?? Does it choke on it like TMPGEnc?
Thanks so much - sorry to be such a bother !

Now you've got it, DVD NTSC, at 23.976 with 3:2 pulldown when playback.
Canopus procoder does well (much better than tmpgenc) with mp3 audio, but even it can crashout.
Better to do audio separately, no matter WHAT it is.

The only reason I really like Ulead is because of its many different menu templates that you can choose from. Do you know if you can do the same thing with TMPGEnc DVD Author and DVDLab??
It seems the pre-set ones are pretty limited.
Thanks again :)

Well I re-encoded the AVI - using 29.97 NTSC with 3:2 pulldown and ran only the audio thru TMPGEnc. Then I loaded the m2v and mp2 files into DVDLab and authored them and its still out of sync ! I give up for tonite - I'm going to bed. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

TDA and DLP both have some templates. I like DLP because I can design my own, and not some canned thing that's never quite what I want.
Is the sync out by the same amount in the whole movie, or does it get worse towards the end?

Its at the beginning and throughout. I've read so much and tried so many different things I'm really confused now. I may have been extracting the audio wrong - I'm not sure yet. I'm running a test (encoding again) and its not done yet to see if it worked. I was extracting the audeo with VirtualDub and saving it as an mp3 file or an AC3 file whichever it happened to be then encoding it in ffmpeggui to mp2 or AC3. I wasn't saving the original as a wave. But if thats my problem I don't know why it just showed up now and not before.
Under advanced settings in TMPGEnc - I should be checking 3:2 pulldown correct?? Should I be checking Do Not Frame Rate Conversion?? Also on the main page I should be checking - DVD NTSC and not VCD NTSC Film??
Just to clarify like I said I've read so much now.

You should select Audio, Full processing, then file, save .wav in VirtualDub.
Transcode the .wav to AC3 in ffmpeggui.
If your source file is 23.976, then select NTSC DVD FILM in the wizard. This will encode at 23.976 with 3:2 pulldown for you.
If you're not using the wizard, select the same things manually on the Settings screen(s).
DO NOT touch the framerate settings.
You're trying to make a DVD, not a VCD, nor SVCD.
In the TMPGEnc wizard, select NTSC DVD.
Set the audio to CBR mpeg-1 layer 2 (mp2).
Click Next.
Open the video file.
Video type, select non-interlaced.
Aspect ratio, 1:1 VGA.
Content of video, FILM MOVIE!!! <---take note of this. Here is where 3:2 pulldown is applied.
Click Next.
Click the Other Settings button.
Set DC Component precision to 10.
Do NOT touch anything else on that screen.
Click OK.
Click Next.
Adjust bitrate if needed, so it all fits on one disk.
Adjust audio bitrate down to 64 so that it's minimum size. It will be discarded anyhow.
Click Next.
Put a tick mark IN the box labeled, "Output video and audio as individual elementary streams".
Click OK.
This will produce an m2v and an mp2.
Delete the mp2.
Load the AC3 and m2v into your authoring program.

Is there a way to preview the video without having to burn it?? I'd like to know if it worked without having to waste a DVD.
Thank you sooooooooo much :)

Any good dvd player software. WinDVD or PowerDVD would be best, although Nero Showtime (free with Nero 6) doesn't do too badly.
Please, do NOT use Windows Media Player to preview. It cannot correctly determine sync, nor aspect.

Ok - I encoded 2 different videos and this is what I got:
The 1st one I encoded the way you told me too and then I multiplexed the 2 files together with TMPGEnc and viewed with PowerDVD and it was still off sync.
The 2nd one I encoded according to this guide I found from another site http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/AVI2DVD.htm - and then I took and multiplexed the 2 files together with TMPGEnc and played on PowerDVD and it was perfect!
I even double checked the original AVI on the 1st to make sure it was in sync and it is so I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

You're not doing anything wrong.
Different methods require different settings, and jimmalenko's guide is as good as any (and better than most).
If you get the output you want, then it worked.
Personally, I would have encoded them separately, then joined during authoring.
There are problems associated when encoding from one framerate to another. Generally jerky video, and/or sync issues. This is why it's recommended to encode at the same framerate (or as close to it as possible) as the source.
Of course, there's always that 1% that'll be the exception that proves the rule ;)

Well i don't know for sure yet if it worked or not I'm still waiting for the other to finish. I downloaded a trial of MainConcept and yes it works a lot faster than TMPGEnc but it seems to eat my CPU.

Mainconcept is CPU intensive, no doubt...but ya gotta admit, encoding a 2 hour movie in less than 2 hours (better than realtime) is a HUGE bonus!
Beware the mainconcept logo that will appear on all your video!
Better off to try Canopus Procoder Express. It's as fast as MC, and cheaper at $59 last I looked.
