WinAVI - sound problem (skipping / jittering)

I am using Winavi to make a dvd disk from some avi movie files that I have. The whole conversion and burn process worked fine, but I noticed that when playing the movie, the sound skips around, and sounds very jittery. The video looks great, but the sound is driving me nuts when I try to watch the DVD on my standalone. Any ideas on a fix? Is it a bitrate problem?

It also happened when I converted a bunch of SWF files, which WinAVI supports as well... jittery audio when played back on a standalone.
