I'm trying to identify what type of disc this is, maybe some of you guys could help out?
It's a DVD-R, 4.7GB, I've gone through several of the threads here on identifying and have tried both DVDInfo and DVD Identifier, with no luck. DVDInfo returned the message "Your Drive does not support the commands required to read MID codes on this media".
The DVD drive is a Benq DVD DD DW1620, upgraded to firmware B7V9, I'm not really sure what I'm lacking to be able to identify the disc, or what DVDInfo means when it says I don't support those commands.
The disc itself has 2 sets of numbers on it, the one on the interior clear section says 4202-2224-08432B03, and the one farther in, typed into the differently shaded purple ring, is DR17-2601-3232.
A friend loaned me the disc, it's the first one I've encountered that will play on all of my DVD players, so naturally I'd kinda like to learn what brand it is so I can start burning the same :D
Also, I've asked him, he got it from someone else and doesn't know anymore about it than I do.
Anyone able to tell me anything more about the disc, or, failing that, how I can resolve issues with my drive to be able to properly use DVDInfo to identify it myself?

I take it you are playing your friends backup, right?

If you can't get your pc to recognize that code, then you more than likely you aren't going to be able to burn them.

Ask him to find the mfg code on it,he can also use nero's infotool along with the other programs you and ian posted.

I've got 2 benq 1620's,my oldest has the B7-C9 and my latest has the B7-L9 firmwares and haven't found any media yet that they won't burn or recognize.16x burn speed on sony +1x-8x media.

Try the plus format. These benq's can booktype dvd+r media to dvd-rom and they are more compatable on the many stand alone players/ps2's/and 4 other pcs that play my backups. My own players have no trouble with either format, but some of my friends and family do.Therefore,I mainly use the plus format, booktyped to dvd-rom.

For all those many stand alones, the book-typed plus media to dvd-rom is more compatable than the dash format-using my benqs.Only 1 very old ps2 that will not play either format of backups from me.Near 100% compatability compared to my last 2 burners. Those last 2 were crap.

Yup I'm playing his backup, it does work in my computer for the purposes of playing on WinDVD and analyzing in DVD Decrypter, I simply don't get MID codes. I tried Nero InfoTool, I would guess that it should be listed under Publisher:, but mine simply says N/A. Unfortunately my friend isn't entirely local, I'll have to wait til tomorrow before I can try anything on his computer, but for now Decrypter says it's a ProdiscS03, that should narrow it down enough, thanks Ian!
And thanks Saugmon, I was under the impression that "-" discs were the most compatible, hence why I usually depend on them for everything, but I'll try what you said about bookmarking "+" to "-rom". The player thats the worst is a brand new RCA, it won't even read my Taiyo Yudans, so I was pretty excited when it was able to handle the prodisc, but I'll borrow some "+"s off him tomorrow when I'm there and give them a shot.

Your buddy has a different burner, therefore it has like a different type of signature-if you get my drift. This means some burners are stronger and some weaker. All burners are different.

I have 5 including my tv home burner. My benq's are highly compatable on other drives compared to my home burner, khpermedia +8x, and a generic I/O magic 16x built by EMPA. That empa drive had 50% compatablility using the dash fomat and the booktyped plus media only had 25% compatability. That totally sucked. The khpermedia backups wouldn't play on my bed room apex player. That second benq took care of that issue. Now I don't have to worry about which burner's backups are going to play in which player. Near total compatability.

Dvd shrink has a box to tick in the backup options. Try some good plus media, tick that box,and give her a go.Nero may have that option too. Also,DVD Decrypter has the option to booktype them also. It's been a while since I set mine up,but if you want the info, just post back.

These benq 1620's are very sweet. I even got mort81 hooked on one.Give the plus media a shot. Here's some of the plus media I use,and at 99% success rate: SonyD11/Yuden000-T02/Maxell-003-00/mcc-002/mcc-003/and a boatload of ricohjpn-01-which is on the majority of maxell +4x media.Even 100% on cmags, but I take extreme measures when I burn them, don't rely on cmags.

Good Luck.
