Ok, a while ago on this forum someone told me to download CD-DVD Speed so that I was able to tell who the actual manufacturer of my DVD-Rs was - so I did...and I was also told to do a quality scan - so I go into "Scan Disc" and check off "Surface scan only" and on my Memorex DVD-R's I get a perfect scan - (the media code for those is prodiscS03) but on my Taiyo Yudens (which are white inkjet printable 8X media - btw) I get maybe 97% readable and 3% "Unreadable"...however, they still play fine in most of the set-top players i've tried and of course my computer plays them fine....so what is the significance of scanning the discs?

Thanks.

To check the discs quality and integrity. All dvd players will cope with slight errors cos they compensate. The worrying thing here is that your ty disc has shown errors which shouldnt happen with a disc of this quality. Are you sure its a genuine ty?Dont rely on the disc info, look around the hub carefully and inscribed on the disc will be numbers such as GG000102 or GGXXXXXX.Check other posts on ad for ty media codes, ive bought fakes before and learnt my lesson. They even had the right disc info when i checked using dvdinfopro.Soon found out what they were when i tried to burn.....lots of errors!!

thanks for the reply, yes, I've been wondering if I bought fakes...I bought them on www.dvd-rwmedia.com (which was listed as a "reliable" place to purchase media in a recent article). They do have have a number on the hub which is (2B527A3006773G). I bought a 100pack so I hope i'm not completely screwed :(. I mean, they do work, but their shouldn't be any errors.

Pieman is right you can't count on disc info, this has been proven by all the fake TYs out there. The easiest way to tell is the serial in the inner hub, should be TGxxxxxx, GG xxxxxx, or GDxxxxxx

nothings a guarantee until you get them home and EXAMIN the disc and even burn a few movies. you can't tell what you are picking up in a store (for the most part) and online, you don't know what's fake or not.

if they are indeed fake, they faked it pretty well, they have that "rough" printing surface that people have talked about ... although, i'm sure a lot of printable discs have the same surface....it's just funny that for the fake TY, they would be the "rough" surface as well - like they really went all out to fake out customers.

That's why I won't buy any UNBRANDED DVDs with no logos by a reputable manufacturer. Taiyo Yudens may be the best, but because they don't carry their own logo on the face of the discs, the DVDs you buy may even be worse than your 3rd rate Princos! Everyone knows TYs are superior, and it's that extra premium in price that attracts counterfeiters. That's why I'll stick with BRANDED DVDs like Ridata, TDK, and Verbatim, and if I were to buy TYs, I'd only buy the Fuji ones stamped 'Made in Japan'.

dvdauthor....send em back asap....be nice at first!!!!No supplier likes to be branded a vendor of fakes....bad press can do serious damage on a site such as this.It takes a while to find a trusted supplier, and it doesnt help when someone says X is ok and Y aint, and then the next bloke says the opposite. Its trial and error that enables trust.Personally, I only trust two suppliers in the UK: for tys and verbats www.blankdiscshop.co.uk.(they are based where i go for long weekend breaks so i can always 'visit') and for emergencys infiniti discs with a MCC dye identical to verbatims www.lordofthedeals.co.uk (he does my local computer fair and ive known him a while)Of course this doesnt help if you are a)not me b)not in the uk and c)out in the wilderness!!.So I can understand your frustration in buying shyte on other peoples recommendations.Ive done it once, (disccity) and never again.Id never use a ritek based disc cos i think theyre shyte but hey, horses for courses!!

Well, this website was listed in a recent article as being a "trusted supplier"....however, now i'm not so sure. I don't think they'll take them back because i've burned maybe 15 of them....it took me this long to see that they were in fact, fake. I'm going to send them an e-mail...and see what happens...here is the letter i'm sending...let me know if it's good...:

Hello,

back in February, I purchased a 100 pack of white inkjet hub printable DVD-R's from your online store. I purchased, what I thought were "Taiyo Yuden". I purchased those because Taiyo Yuden black media is said to be of some of the highest quality you can use. My problem is that i've burned about 10-15 of these DVD-R's and none of them are error free. I've done numerous scans with different software and they are not 100% flawless. I've tried many different authoring software packages as well as different dvd burners and these dvd's do no appear to be Taiyo Yuden at all. The media code says it is, but the serial number around the hub is cleary not "Taiyo Yuden" material. I've also had other people look at them and i've been told they are not authentic and that the media code is a fake. I'm very dissapointed with my first purchase from www.dvd-rwmedia.com.

i use ebuyer in the UK a fair bit. but i used to buy bulkpaq from them (i know i know, i was a newbie!). they were fakes and i tried half a dozen times over last month or so, submitting product reviews to their website stating they were fake etc(fake TYG02). the review would be accepted by the website each time but never appear onn website. In the end i raised it with ebuyer and they just told me they were not stocking those discs anymore so in other words tough!. i still check every now and then as i'm sure the reviews of previously discontinued items reappear when they start re-stocking items at a later date. I use only Verbatim datalifeplus now, from www.svp.co.uk and sometimes ebuyer.
