Good Instructions on cleaning your machine yourself..
Try this own you own first then tell me if it helps or not.
First lets start by saying that your Bios in your PS2 is all code, to change that or fix you will to reprogram your bios, What kind of errors were you getting or what exactly is the PS2 doing or not doing? Did he give you exact detail on how he found that your bios were bad?

Yeah I hate to say if you might be better off, then getting it fixed.. as far as cost. Actually sounds like you laser might be fried, that can be replaced, but like I said, better off on a new one. Sounds kinda like though this repair guy is trying to get some money out you, cause for one thing laser is one thing, usually you can do it yourself cheap, but I dont understand how hes coming up with the bios being dead, Thats programming codes in the chip usually the only way that can be checked is with some expensive equipment or through Sony.
