hi all~

i have been searching the forums all morning looking for an answer to my problems i'm having, and i haven't found an answer, so i thought i would ask!!

i am new to backing up my ps2 games. i have been having no problem with my dvd based games. however, i just put in "wave rally" which is a cd game and i cannot figure out how to back it up onto a blank dvd.
for my dvd games, i have been using dvd decrypter which is really easy for me. i know i cannot use that for cd based games, so i downloaded both alcohol 120% and clone cd off of this site... i thought that i was using alcohol 120% correctly because it didn't show any errors throughout the process. i put my backup copy into my ps2 (using swap magic) and it said it wasn't a valid ps2 disc. i have read the guides, followed them and i still cannot figure out what i am doing incorrectly.

any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

your trying to put cd ps2 game on dvd? Making sure b4 I go into detail. To put a CD game onto a DVD-R you will need to write a DVD Check file so that the PS2 will play it as a DVD.

hey, thanks for your reply. i will check that out. i don't really understand if i am supposed to be burning a cd game on a cd-r or a dvd+r. does it matter?? i tried using Alcohol 120% and burning it to a cd, it wouldn't play. so i thought, "maybe i should be burning them to a dvd?" i don't get why i can backup dvd games so easily, but not the cd games. i just need help with the process, it is obviously different and i don't know how to do it. i followed a few people's instructions on this site and as far as i could tell, they backed up successfully, but they wouldn't read in my ps2...

so i'm guessing i'm not doing it correctly...

Oh ok I see now, then actually you dont need to put a cd game on a dvd, just how to get the cd backup to work. Well go from there first.

First few questions in order to help u out. What version PS2 do u have? you are using swap magic cd,correct, what version? Your using alcohol.. Are you mounting the image to the virtual drive then copying the image to cd?

i have a version 4 ps2 and i am using flip top with swap magic version 3.3...

this was my first time ever using Alcohol 120%, so that is why i am not sure if i did the process correctly. i am so used to decrypter, that i am a little confused by alcohol. i copied the game files to my hard drive, then tried to burn them to a blank cd-r. the game files created were some weird type like mdf, i don't remember. i'm only used to burning iso files for dvd movies and dvd games. this is where i am getting confused. how to use alcohol exactly and the weird types of files it creates to my harddrive....

thanks again for your replies!!

ok cool.. Use alcohol.. its the best..I had problems till I started using alcohol, inorder to get a good copy you have to mount the image to the virtual drive 1st, if you are not using the actual cd or dvd. First thing first open Alcohol click on general tab and then click on virtual drive, pick the number of virtual drive you want, use 1 for now, once that is done click ok at the bottom, a virtual drive will appear on alcohol, mine is G: but it will be under virtual drive.
Now option 1, if you are backing up the cd or dvd itself click on copy wizard, put original in the your cd/dvd drive, it should show up in the session as a mode 2, then blah blah... click on data type at the bottom, pick ps1 or ps2, accourding to the game you are backing up..click on the lowest read speed.then hit next, then pick from there start your burn process....
ok now option 2 if you are using the image(mdf) file only now disc... open alcohol and open the folder seperately from alcohol where the image is at. Drag the .mdf to the blank space in alcohol where the name , path and all that is at, it should be the upper level, then from there take that image and drag it down from the upper level direcctly to the Virtual drive, it should now have an image in the virtual drive, mounted. now click copy wizard and do the same as if you were burning the image as I explained earlier..
I hope this helps if not let me know.. See I was trying to backup games with the originals and the just the image, I had problems with "not valid ps2 disc" until I started mounting the image... Now works everytime....

the three games i am trying to back up are: wild wild racing, top gun and wave rally. they are all cd based. like i said, i've done all my dvd based games with 0 coasters whatsoever. i cannot get any of these cd games to work... i don't understand what i am doing wrong?? i'm the same as you, i've learned everything from this awesome website. unfortunately though, i seem to ask more questions than help others with their questions (i don't know if that makes sense)...

anyhow, yes, i have Nero but i hate using it. it confuses my even more. could my problem be that i am burning the cd based games onto cd-r?? should i be burning them onto dvd+r's??

oh, and i have the entire, original games-not just the image.

hmm, no it should copy to cd-r's I've backed up many to cd. only thing t hough is swap magic has TOC of like 630mb, are they bigger than that? If so then transfering to dvd might be better

Yeah swap magic cd disc on ps2 cd's only boot games with a TOC limit of about 632MB on the backup .If its anything over that it wont work with swap magic cd. Long as you are not going over that then it works. Its weird cause I sat up the other night with my buddy and took all his ps2 games cd and dvd also his cd based ps1 games and made perfect copies using Alcohol... One other thing are they PAL or NTSC? Lets try another very easy program,I've been looking around and have found people complaining about alcohol on backing up ps2 cd based games.. Lets use CLONECD.. try dl this and see how it works http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_applications/clonecd.cfm ... VEry easy all you do is cgo to Copy cd, click on game CD and hit next and wait...

all 3 games are NTSC. i have tried clonecd before, didn't care for it, but i will give it another try. when i open up alcohol and put my game in the drive, it brings it up on alcohol as saying "used space-561.6 mb" so i am assuming it is under the 632 mb limit in size... i just want to thank you again for your continued posting in trying to help me figure out this problem. nobody else has even piped in. i guess they just don't care :c(

Yeah if its under 632 you should be good.. I wish I could help more, its kinda hard when you just tell someone what to do with out seeing, cause you cant see the little things that may be overlooked.. You seem to know what your doing though so I dont doubt your knowledge.. Try Clone CD and see what it does, I no its frustrating with all those coasters..lol..

yes, i do know what i am doing (at least when it comes to using shrink and decrypter). i have had 0 coasters backing up my dvd movies and dvd based ps2 games, so i feel like i am doing it perfectly. that is why i cannot figure out why i am having problems with the cd games. i mean really, they cannot be that much different, other than i cannot use DVD Decrypter. it's like there is some little "special" trick that i cannot figure out. it's very frusterating. in fact, i'm giving it up for awhile because i have wasted so many discs and i just need to take a break from it. i totally want to thank you for all of your time and advice. it is much appreciated. i just wish i knew whatever i was doing incorrectly.
