hi...

i have a question about these jewel-cases, i use jewelcase b-grade"... wahetever that means...

the problem with these are that when you out a dvd in the case it "rests" in slightly crooked way...

my buddy claims that this fucks the dvd up, not in weeks, but in a couple of months...

is there any truth in this?

thanks...

no one can give a honest answer on how long a dvd will last, but YES storage has a great deal of influence. store vertically as opposed to horizontally and try to use quality cases dont just let them set around the house. i keep all of mine in real dvd cases that i get from supermediastore for 30 us dollars, i get 200. that way they look nice too.

I keep them in CD books. Not the best, I know, but I'm constantly moving them around trying to keep them in alphabetical order and I checked out one the other day that I move around a lot and it was fine. Even if they start to get bad you can just reburn. What's a disc cost nowadays, like $0.40?

On my printed dvd's along with the printed covers,I use the single black cases that look just like the original. I get them at staples, but they are very tight when you place that backup dvd in them. I work them quite a bit by pushing them in and out about 25 times to loosen them up and they fit a lot better.I've notice disc separation on one of them, with out loosening them up.

The not so great backups,I just place them in the thinner, clear double cases and they fit just right in them.I also use the smaller slim jewel cases when I pass a movie around to my frinds and family. These are only about 15 cents apiece. They work very nice, but too small for my dvd rack.

I do lay them straight up in my dvd rack.

I have been using jewel cases, which I store vertically in a bookcase that has tinted glass I try to keep them away from sunlight and humidity. Lately I have been switching to the book style holders so I can flip through them easily, and caterorize them. I have never had a problem with the jewel cases and there are inserts you can buy to put in the cases so that the dvd rests on them. I have stored dvd/cd in jewel cases for years and never had a problem in playback.

Ive got mine hanging vertically(!) in aluminium dj cases with those little packets of silica gel to keep em dry.Ive had a couple of older cds get disc rot....im told this is down to a perforation of the acrylic that lets moisture in.My oldest burned dvds are about 12 months old now, and some need reburning all of them shyte ritex dyes...but the verbats are still like new.Strange.Of course I cant rule out burning problems cos you make a few balls ups when your a newbie!

Ive heard cheap storage media (DVD cases ; Slim cases, double cases, standard DVD case as well as CD jewel cases) can damage the hub (center) of the DVD. DVDs have a slightly smaller hub than a cd/cd-r and when used with cases made for a cd the DVD hub might start to develop cracks over time from being pressed onto the snap retainer in the case.. Ive only had this happen with dirt cheap DVD-R/DVD+Rs , the hub started devopling tiny fractures/cracks and soon the disc became unbalanced and wouldnt play so I reburned em to better media tossed the bad ones and upgraded to the proper storage media

i've had this happen to a retail x-files dvd, but admittedly i did buy that one ex-rental. what's odd is it's in the new 'm-lok' packaging so the disc hub is hardly making contact with the disc. so i guess it was treated roughly by previous user. what an insult to Scully :)
