PS2 boot error?

Im not sure which PS2 model I have, but my friend that got if for me at game stop said it was the last model before the slim one came out. But heres the problem. When I got the ps2 it worked fine every type of disc would boot/play perfect. I installed a toploader and for some reason when i would put all of the screws in the case the disc wouldnt boot, but if the case was loose the disc would rub on the case. So i took the case completely off and now when i use a game dvd the ps2 loads to the playstation 2 screen then sometime to the game title then freezes. When i tried to watch blade trinity it went to the movie menue then when i pick one of the options like to watch the movie or special features it would freeze completely. Any ideas on how to fix this or what might be wrong. Thanks, J-man

Fliptop? If so I think everyone has had that problem, but it was becasue the disc was upside down, the disc would make noise when I inserted a disc. Now it works fine. AS far as the games freezing, you might wanna try cleaning the laser, if you havent already.
