i have an xvid movie. when i convert it to dvd it shows good for about half of the movie but then the audio and video gets out of sync.
in GSpot the FPS is 25.000 and the movie has AC3 audio. i am using TMPGEnc to encode the video. is there any settings that i should change? thanks for all your help.

Generally TMPGEnc can not read AC3 audio in AVI files unless you have the "AC3 ACM decompressor" Installed....

If the Audio is really Dolby AC3 then you should extract the audio as an AC3 audio file and use that audio when authoring your DVD because re-encodeing the audio will lower the quality and Dolby AC3 is the best format to use on DVD"s anyways...

This would entail just encodeing the Video with TMPGEnc and extracting the AC3 audio from the AVI file useing Virtual-Dub...

As to your Sync problem it could be from a few Things Like there Might be an audio delay at the Beginning of the AVI file....

Also if you are encodeing this PAL AVI file to a NTSC Mpeg-2/DVD File then the Sync problem might be caused from the Frame Rate conversion from 25fps to 29.976fps which is Possible as TMPGEnc isn"t the Best at Frame Rate conversions....

You could also Try decompressing the Audio in the AVI file before encodeing it to Mpeg-2/DVD because this can fix the Sync problem if it is Caused from an audio delay or if it is Caused from VBR audio...
If you PM me with your e-mail address I can send you a Little Tool that will decompress the audio in your AVI file......

well that is all I can think of for now...Good Luck

Well first I will send you the Audio decompressor tool so you can try that and see if it fixes your Problem....

Also what type of Sync problem is it, Is it the Type that starts out in sync but gradually goes out of sync as the Movie progresses or is it out of Sync from the Beggining to the End, or is it in sync and then suddenly the audio just pops out of Sync??

Generally speaking TMPGEnc doesn"t cause too many problems when going from PAL to NTSC but occationally with some files there can be sync problems and Jumpy Playback....

One of the Best programs for doing NTSC/Pal conversions is "Canopus Procoder" and it is also a very high quality encoder...

You would probably get a Better Looking encode if instead of setting the Frame Rate in TMPGEnc to 29.976 you first set the "Encode Mode" to "3:2 pulldown when Playback" and then set the "Frame Rate" setting to "23.976fps(Internally 29.976fps)" and then encode....

This makes it so instead of TMPGEnc duplicateing every Fifth Frame to make up the extra 5 frames per second needed for the 25fps to 29.976fps conversion (which can cause jumpy playback in high motion scenes) it instead Just drops one frame per second and then adds 3:2 Pulldown to make up the 29.976fps frame rate which makes for a Much Smoother Playback....

You will have to have all of the settings unlocked to change them to do this click the "load" button and navigate to the "Extra" folder inside the "templates" folder and select the "Unlock.mcf" file and that will unlock all of the settings...You can also unlock Individual Settings by right clicking the setting and selecting "Unlock"......

So I"ll e-mail you the Tool now and you try it and encode the file useing the settings I just described and see if it works...

Cheers

PS: You should edit your Post and remove your e-mail address cuz poeple might Harvest it....

the movie gets out of sync all of a sudden near the middle of the movie. sorry i cant use your tool because i have AC3 audio. anymore help would be great. i will use your settings in TMPGEnc but do u think it will help?

as i said i seperated the AC3 audio and the video in VirtualDub. then i encoded with tmpgenc and authored with tmpgenc dvd author. Do you think this is the best to join the audio and video back together or is there a better way?

Well if the Audio goes out of sync all of a sudden near the Middle of the Movie then the Problem could be caused from some sort of Error or corrupted area of the File...

Did you make this File by joining 2 other files?? Because if it goes out of Sync all of a Sudden at the Middle of the Movie it sounds like a Bad join between 2 Files in which case it would be extremely difficult to Fix.....

If you still have the Two AVI files then Try encodeing them seperately and try Joining them after encodeing to Mpeg-2 an d se if that helps which it might very well work just Fine...

You could also try Frameserveing the Files from V-Dub to TMPGEnc but I think encodeing them seperately and Joining them after words should Hopefully work...

Good Luck...Cheers
