need help on restoring old VHS tapes to DVD

I've been backing up VHS tapes to DVD. These tapes contain college sports footage of a very dear friend. I volunteered to back it up in DVD since I had a VHS to DVD machine. Some of these tapes are about 15 years old and he (and I) are wondering if we could spruce up the old tapes. Is there any software program that can clean this up? What do we need to do?
